AVUTEC: Understanding Triggers and Actions In ANPR Systems
Triggers and actions are a familiar concept in many access control, parking, and security management systems. They define how systems respond automatically to events: if something happens, then something else follows. Traditionally, this logic lives in central software platforms or controllers.
With our ANPR camera systems and cloud portal, that same concept is brought to the camera system itself. The camera does not only recognise license plates but actively participates in the decision-making process and works together with external systems such as barriers, intercoms, access control platforms, and cloud applications.
In this article, we explain how triggers and actions work within our ANPR cameras and explore the possibilities this creates when designing flexible, automated access solutions.
What are triggers and actions?
A trigger is an event or condition detected by the ANPR camera that initiates a response. This can be the recognition of a specific license plate, a match against a whitelist or blacklist, the detection of an unregistered vehicle, a digital input going high on the I/O interface, or even a recognition occurring only during defined hours.
An action is the automated response that follows once the trigger conditions are met. Depending on the configuration, the camera can open a barrier, activate a relay, send an email or data message, add or remove a license plate from a list, or log detailed event data including images and timestamps.
Together, triggers and actions create a clear “if this, then that” logic. This transforms the camera from a passive recording device into an active component of the access control and security infrastructure, capable of responding instantly without manual intervention.
The power of conditional logic
What makes triggers especially powerful is that they are not limited to a single condition. Multiple criteria can be combined, all of which must be true before an action is executed.
For example, a trigger can require:
- A license plate to appear on a specific list
- During defined hours of the day
- At a particular camera location
- On selected days of the week
Only when all conditions align does the action take place. This conditional logic allows the system to reflect real-world operational rules, rather than forcing processes into rigid, one-size-fits-all behaviour.
Actions can also be chained. A single trigger may simultaneously open a gate, log the event with an image and timestamp, notify security staff, and update an external system — all within milliseconds of the recognition.
Practical applications
To illustrate the flexibility of triggers and actions, consider the following scenarios.
Scenario 1: One-time pass - temporary access for deliveries
A company site uses ANPR for employee access control, while delivery drivers arrive with unknown plates. Instead of permanently adding these vehicles, access is granted only when needed.
The entrance camera is linked to the intercom system. When reception manually grants access, the camera receives a digital input signal. This triggers an automatic sequence: the last recognised license plate is added to the exit camera’s whitelist for a defined period.
The delivery driver completes the drop-off and exits smoothly. Once the time window expires, the plate is automatically removed. Temporary access is controlled, auditable, and the whitelist stays clean.
Scenario 2: Kiss & Ride
A kiss & ride zone allows drivers to drop off or pick up passengers quickly, free of charge. When a vehicle enters the zone, the camera recognises the license plate and automatically adds it to the exit whitelist with a one-hour validity.
If the driver exits within that hour, the barrier opens automatically. If the vehicle stays longer, the plate is removed from the whitelist. When the driver attempts to exit, the barrier remains closed and a message indicates that payment is required.
Short visits remain fast and frictionless, while overstays are handled automatically — without staff involvement.
Scenario 3: VIP arrival notification
A corporate site wants key staff to be notified when important visitors arrive, without requiring someone to monitor camera feeds. License plates of expected VIPs are added to a dedicated list. When the entrance camera recognises a plate from this list, it automatically sends an email to predefined recipients.
The visitor experiences seamless access, while the right people are informed immediately — without any manual checks.
Under the hood implementation options
Our ANPR cameras support trigger and action logic in two ways, depending on the installation environment.
For sites with internet connectivity, configuration can be done via our portal using a wizard-based interface. Triggers, conditions, and actions are selected and combined step by step, without requiring programming knowledge. When a vehicle is recognised, the camera sends the event data to the portal, where the trigger logic is evaluated and the corresponding actions are executed. This approach offers extensive flexibility and centralised management across multiple cameras and locations.
For installations behind firewalls or in environments without internet access, trigger logic can be implemented directly on the camera using scripting. This ensures that automation remains fully operational without external connectivity, making it suitable for secure or isolated sites.
Both approaches deliver the same core capability: intelligent, real-time automation at the camera level. The choice depends on operational requirements and infrastructure.
Building smarter access control
Triggers and actions fundamentally change what an ANPR camera can do. Instead of simply capturing data for later review, the camera actively responds to events as they happen.
The examples above are just a starting point. With the right combination of triggers, conditions, and actions, ANPR-based access control can be tailored to virtually any scenario — reducing manual work, improving response times, and creating seamless experiences for authorised users while maintaining strict control where it matters.
