Open Payment Systems for Consumers at EV Charging Stations

CCV Joins Mastercard Sustainability Program

CCV Joins Mastercard Sustainability Program

CCV becomes the first partner of Mastercard’s Sustainable Mobility Programme in Germany. With the cross-border initiative Mastercard supports a consumer-friendly infrastructure for electric vehicles, and promotes open, flexible and secure payment systems at EV charging stations in Europe.

The payment service provider CCV will join Mastercard in the Sustainable Mobility Programme with its offering of smart unattended payment terminals, developed to meet the fast-evolving needs of the EV charging industry.

Sustainable Mobility Programme

Mastercard launched the Sustainable Mobility Programme at the end of 2020 with the aim of making modern, open payment systems available to all market participants, without restrictions like provider ties. This applies in particular to the simple and secure payment for EV charging while traveling. Currently, due to lack of a uniform open payment infrastructure, travelling and charging electric vehicles can be inconvenient and require much planning.

Electromobility can only prevail, if there is a comprehensive supply of charging options. Uniform standards and secure, open payment systems are important in order to promote acceptance among consumers and strengthen sustainable e-mobility. Together with CCV, we want to offer electric vehicle drivers the same payment convenience as they are used to from conventional petrol stations,” says David Klemm, Vice President Business Development at Mastercard.

“CCV has been involved in shaping the EV charging market for many years offering payment solutions which include payment devices together with processing and acquiring as well as in-app payment as part of a uniform and open payment solution. With our extensive network of trusted partners, we are strongly positioned to bring payment innovation and convenience to both merchants and their customers,” said John Kolthof, CCO of CCV GmbH. “We are delighted to be taking a further decisive step towards the standardisation of payment systems with Mastercard.” Both companies will initially start their cooperation in Germany, and will focus on the distribution of payment terminals with open-loop payment systems to integrators, energy providers, and other companies in the EV market. The next step is to expand the cooperation to other European countries.

Open-Loop Payment Technology

The payment infrastructure for electric vehicles in highly fragmented. As a result, customers do not always have the option of paying with conventional payment methods such as contactless with credit cards or mobile devices. The open-loop technology used at CCV enables businesses to accept widely used payment methods, making it possible for electric vehicle drivers to pay safely and conveniently contactless with their credit and debit cards, even if they are stored in digital wallets such as Apple Pay and Google Pay.

As part of the cooperation both companies will rely on CCV IM30, an unattended multimedia-capable payment terminal running on Android OS. This state-of-the-art terminal can be tailored for the EV charging station, integrating custom applications, and creating a seamless on-brand customer journey. CCV IM30 is equipped with a camera, a sensitive touchscreen, and a proximity sensor. In addition to conventional payment methods, CCV IM30 can also accept QR-code and app-based payments.
