Nordisk Profil: How to Ensure Fire Safe Facades?

Nordisk Profil Sets New Standard for Fire Safe Wooden Facades

That was the key question when our customer and collaboration partner, Continental Car Parks (CCP), joined us in Copenhagen for a dedicated event with one clear focus: fire safety.

Wood is increasingly popular as a facade material, both for its natural aesthetics and its ability to complement other materials. But along with the demand comes a familiar concern: fire performance, and uncertainty around requirements, test methods, and documentation.

At Nordisk Profil, the answer is straightforward. Choose a documented, CE marked facade system that has been tested correctly for end use. Documentation is not an add on. It is a prerequisite.

Five essentials for fire safe wooden facades

These are not “nice to have” points. They are the baseline for risk management and compliance.

  • Use CE marked facade systems (verified by a third party notified body)
  • Always use solid wood approved for outdoor use (EN 14915)
  • Always request an end use classification report (EN 13501-1)
  • Ensure the fire test is conducted according to EN 13823 (worst case scenario)
  • Request proper documentation

With products that meet these requirements, you are on the right track. At Nordisk Profil, documented facade systems are the foundation of our approach. All the points above are integrated into the way we develop, test, document, and deliver our solutions.

Fire approved facade systems with proven classification

Our Woodfac facade systems with wooden lamellae are classification tested and achieve B-s1,d0 and B-s2,d0, documenting high fire safety in realistic end use scenarios.

A key principle is that an EN 13823 test at an accredited institute must be performed using a worst case end use scenario in an internal corner configuration. This is widely considered the most critical setup for fire performance, as it drives higher heat release rates, faster flame spread, and stronger smoke and droplet development.

Full compliance and documentation that supports approvals

At Nordisk Profil, documentation is part of the solution. We can provide the fire technical documentation needed to support facade decisions and approvals, and our systems comply with harmonised EU standards for facade systems:

EU Regulation CPR No 305/2011

  • Establishes the legal framework for CE marking and performance declarations of construction products

Harmonised EN Standard EN 14915

  • Provides the product-level requirements for solid wood cladding, and test methods for CE marking

Classification Standard EN 13501-1

  • Provides the fire classification system used across all construction products. Followed and end-use classification Reports, B-s1,d0 and B-s2,d0

Test Standard EN 13823

  • Specify the method used to determine fire behavior and classification of materials and systems. Followed and end-use approved, all four sides exposed
