Port of Anacortes Announces Transition to Pay-by-Cell Only Parking

Washington port will rely on mobile pay service to accept parking payments

Change is coming to parking in Washington state, but not the kind that involves coins. Beginning this week, the Port of Anacortes will replace traditional parking payment hardware with a service that allows you to pay for parking from your mobile phone.

The pay-by-cell service, PassportParking, allows parking customers to pay for their parking with any type of mobile phone by using an app, mobile website, or local phone number. In addition to paying for parking, the new service also provides parking customers with reminders before their parking session expires and the ability to extend their session without having to return to the parking lot.

“With PassportParking, we’ve put the pay station right in their hands” said Josh Beaner, Marine & Aviation Services Manager for the Port of Anacortes. “Our customers can now pay for parking anywhere, whether on the way to their destination or from the comfort of their own vehicle.”

Once parked, drivers will use PassportParking to pay for their parking session. Using the app, website, or voice system, parking customers will enter the zone and space number listed on signage and then select how long they wish to stay.

Customers must first register for the new service, however this can easily be done in advance or on-site. Customers can even register with just the push of a button using Facebook.

Located halfway between Seattle and Vancouver, the Port of Anacortes is not the first PassportParking location to solely use the mobile pay service to collect parking revenues. Most recently, California State Parks - Orange Coast District launched PassportParking-only payments in its Huntington Beach lot.

“We are thrilled to bring our mobile pay service to the Port of Anacortes,” said Khristian Gutierrez, Managing Partner at PassportParking. “The Port understands the huge value this convenience brings to its customers. In addition, the decision to go mobile pay only demonstrates the Port’s commitment to creating an eco-friendly environment for the community. We look forward to a long relationship with the Port of Anacortes as it continues to improve the parking experience for its customers.”
