Parking Facility at Ljubljana School of Economics Puts Quercus LPR Technology to the Test

- Ljubljana, Slovenia
Ljubljana School of Economics

Slovenia’s Ljubljana School of Economics is an academic and research institution with national and worldwide recognition in the fields of business and economics. The quality of its academic programs and achievements make it an internationally-renowned institution.

Its parking facility is located near the School of Economics and Business of the University of Ljubljana. It features 350 parking spaces that are available by the hour, day or month (with individual or corporate user options). This parking facility forms part of the ParkEF project, the Sustainable Mobility Innovation Center that is being developed by the SEB LU with the aim of supporting sustainable, state-of-the-art transportation options.

With the installation of license plate recognition cameras at the school, mobility has improved, and the parking process has become automated. This is in addition to saving users’ time, and contributing to reducing fuel consumption and efficient energy use by vehicles, one of the main goals that led to the launch of this project. By streamlining the process, fewer lines build up and traffic is more fluid, making major reductions in emissions achievable.

How Does This New Parking System Work?

Instead of having students pay for parking facility access on a daily, monthly or quarterly basis, all they have to do is register in advance, providing certain information such as their vehicle license number and the abbreviation of the school they are enrolled in. That way, the system will recognize their license plate every time they enter the parking facility, and they don’t have to go back to the payment terminal until the service plan they have contracted has expired.

For occasional users who only need the parking service for a given time, the process is a little different. When they enter the parking facility, the license plate recognition unit will read and store their license plate number in the parking facility system, and access control barriers will automatically be raised. When leaving the facility, users enter their vehicle license plate number in the payment terminal, and then pay for the time they have had their vehicle parked.

In short, a fast, efficient system that guarantees more robust security to the school’s students, employees and visitors. With this license plate identification system, it is possible to collect enough information to calculate rates, stay times, number of users who have used the parking, which of them are repeat customers and which are occasional visitors, etc. This is very valuable information for the parking facility operator, as they will have the data necessary to conduct strategies based on the use made of the facility.

Quercus license plate readers are all-in-one units. In other words, they include all the technology necessary to read license numbers in the unit itself. This ANPR camera has been designed to contribute to mobility, helping ensure smart, effective touchless access control.
