Mornington Peninsula Shire Launches Smart Parking in Rye

450 vehicle detection sensors will be installed in Mornington Peninsula to reduce congestion.

January 2020 saw the go-live of a Smart Parking project in the Mornington Peninsula suburb of Rye, Australia.

With over 6.3 million annual visitors to Mornington Peninsula, the aim of the project is to improve parking and congestion in Rye by employing a network of approximately 450 vehicle detection sensors in the foreshore and commercial areas.

The sensors monitor individual bay activity and relay this, via our SmartCloud platform, to on-site digital signage that display live parking availability. As well, residents and visitors can download the free Smart Parking app, which shows real-time bay availability and provides directions to said car parks using the Google Maps interface.

This means that people wanting to find a place to park their car can expedite the process, cutting down on time wasted circling the streets in the busy precinct, and improving vehicle emissions.

The power of information is delivered into the hands of the Mornington Peninsula Council via the SmartCloud dashboard, as this Google-powered IoT platform can show them the site in real-time, as well as giving them the ability to download customized reporting on information such as average stay times, peak hours and congested areas, among others.

"This is an exciting project to bring to the citizens and visitors of Rye, and we’re very much looking forward to working with Mornington Peninsula Shire Council on the smart city initiative. As always, any new uptake of our Smart Park system is further validation of the technology we offer." - Ben Williams, Smart Parking Limited General Manager of Sales.
