Urbiotica: An Innovative Approach to Understanding Urban Parking — The Losser Case
The municipality of Losser, in the Netherlands, has launched a parking analytics project together with Spotten and Urbiotica to gain a clear understanding of how parking spaces are used across different areas of the city.
The initiative will provide real-world data on occupancy, turnover and parking duration, helping support future urban planning and mobility decisions.
A Different Approach to Understanding Parking Demand

With this objective in mind, Losser has deployed 650 parking occupancy sensors to analyze parking behavior across different areas of the municipality over time.

Sensors Designed to Move with the City
One of the project's unique features is the deployment model developed by Spotten to make sensor relocation simple and efficient.
Urbiotica's sensors are installed within specially designed pavement tiles that can be easily moved between different areas of the city. Once the analysis of a specific location is complete, the sensors can be relocated and reused elsewhere without requiring new installations.
This approach extends the reach of the project and provides a broader understanding of parking demand across the municipality.

Using the system, Losser will be able to monitor key indicators such as:
- Parking occupancy levels
- Vehicle turnover
- Average parking duration
- Peak and off-peak demand periods
