Urbiotica: Torrent Improves Access to PMR Parking Spaces With Smart Parking Technology

A clear example of how technology can transform urban mobility, making it more inclusive, sustainable, and people centred.

The City Council of Torrent (Valencia) has completed a new phase of its urban digitalisation strategy with the installation of smart sensors in parking spaces reserved for people with reduced mobility (PMR). This project, carried out in collaboration with Pavapark, the technology partner, reinforces the municipality’s commitment to more accessible, efficient, and connected mobility.

A total of 169 PMR spaces have been equipped with sensors across different phases, as part of a plan that combines public funding and institutional support within the framework of smart city initiatives.

The solution is based on NB-IoT sensors embedded in the pavement. These devices detect in real time whether a space is occupied or available, transmitting the information both to the municipal management platform and to a mobile app for citizens. In addition to providing up-to-date information on space availability, the system plays a key role in monitoring the correct use of these reserved areas.

One of the major benefits of this project is the improvement in controlling misuse. The Local Police can act more effectively thanks to real-time alerts, ensuring compliance with regulations and protecting the rights of people with reduced mobility.

This technology also reduces unnecessary trips and improves the experience for users who genuinely rely on these spaces. At the same time, it enhances operational efficiency in parking management and helps cut congestion and emissions caused by drivers searching for parking.

A clear example of how technology can transform urban mobility, making it more inclusive, sustainable, and people centred.
